This module provides a cross-border exploration of key legal and policy issues affecting mass media and communication in the context of global media platforms, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and “post-truth” politics. It addresses topics such as content moderation, defamation, privacy, copyright law and AI-generated content, as well as the liability of media platforms for both their publications and user-generated content.
The module focuses primarily on media regulation standards established by the European Convention on Human Rights and other frameworks relevant to the UK and EU, while also offering comparisons with other jurisdictions. It also evaluates how global platforms like Google and Facebook respond to regulatory challenges. No prior knowledge of media law is required, as foundational legal principles will be introduced.
