The module aims to provide students with the linguistic vocabulary and analytical tools necessary for describing the key properties of (English) language effectively and accurately, enabling them to talk about language in the L2 classroom systematically (including the description of learner errors, responding to learner questions about language). It also aims to train students in the foundations of linguistic description that will allow them to deepen their own understanding of the nature of language.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to describe some of the main properties of the sounds, word structure, word meaning, sentence structure, and discourse properties of English using appropriate linguistic terminology. You will be able to apply your knowledge to the analysis of new samples of language, including the language produced by language learners.
