This module is focused on the practical study of speech sounds. The aims of the course are to familiarise the students with the mechanisms involved in speech production and provide them with hands-on experience of transcribing and analysing speech, by combining auditory and acoustic methods. The labs will be used to complement the materials taught in the lecture and will help students make links between articulation, acoustics, and hearing.
On successful completion of the module, the students will be able to:
(i) understand the principles underlying the classification and description of speech sounds
(ii) listen analytically to speech, so as to transcribe English and non-English speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
(iii) understand the acoustic properties of speech and how they relate to articulatory phonetics
(iv) understand the basics of audition and hearing, and how they relate to acoustic phonetics
