Module Description
This course is an introduction to the syntax of the English language, looking at the various syntactic structures present in the language. This will include phenomena such as word order, embedded clauses, tense and aspect, question formation, and passives. An emphasis of the course is using syntactic argumentation to propose and defend analyses of syntactic structures.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this half module, students should
a) Begin to implement formal tools to aid in understanding syntax.
b) Apply critical thinking to datasets centered around language.
c) Develop writing and argumentation skills.
