This module provides an introduction to key concepts used in the description and analysis of the structure of words, phrases and sentences. We look at word, phrase and sentence structures, drawing on examples from a range of languages. Topics will include the identification of phrases and basic parsing of sentences into parts and their functions, words and word classes, the structure of a sentence and relationships which hold within the clause.
This module presents foundational material for the study of linguistics, employing examples from some of the world's languages. It will also facilitate the development of practical and analytic skills.
Aims: This module seeks to provide a basic introduction to grammatical description through the investigation of word and sentence structure. You will also begin to develop some of the key analytic skills employed in linguistics.
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
* identify the category of words and delimit the major phrases in a sentence
* have a sound grasp of basic grammatical description
* be able to use appropriate descriptive vocabulary in relation to grammatical structures
* Understand the relationships that hold within the clause
