This module is designed to offer the student the opportunities to identify, develop and practice the essential skills required for effective communication in business. The emphasis within this unit is on providing opportunities for the practical demonstration of communication skills pertinent to the business and management context. As such, it draws on the role of the manager in terms of communicating through participative exercises; listening exercises; writing reports and conducting presentations. This module, therefore, will enable students to better relate to the academic concepts studied in business and management related subjects taken in terms 2 and 3 of the course.

Students will study communication strategies in tutorials and will practice them within the framework of assigned tasks.

Module aims

This module will develop students' confidence to communicate with different cultural groups; to work in teams; make persuasive oral presentations and to develop the critical thinking and time management skills essential for successful undergraduate study.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will:

1. Understand fully the communication process models as they apply in a management setting.
2. Understand the theoretical and practical implications of effective communication.
3. Develop effective presentational skills, individually and as part of a group.
4. Understand the concept of working in a group and the principles of group dynamics.
5. Have the ability to participate effectively in a team project.
6. Produce a report and a presentation that utilises a format and language appropriate for the business and management setting
7. Understand how to successfully address case studies.

- The communication process, including types of communication, the communicative process and barriers to effective communication.
- Contemporary issues in Business Communication, including employability, presentations and interviews.
- Communication in employment , including CVs (resumes) and covering letters.
- Team work, including a group presentation.
- Business report writing.
- Writing of business letters and e-mails
- Reflective learning

Assessment

This module will be assessed 100% by coursework and there will be no written examination. An aggregate module mark of at least 40% is required to pass IA703.

Formative tasks will include submission of draft report and presentation practice.

Coursework is comprised of:

- group oral presentation due in week 5, with feedback by week 7 (weighting 35%).
- in-class test, 90 minutes, in week 8, with feedback by week 11 (weighting 25%).
- an individual written business report of 1,500 words due in week 11, with feedback in week 16 (weighting 40%). Title given out in week 6.
