This interdisciplinary module serves a dual function. Firstly, it anchors each discipline with the Department in relation to one another. Students will spend three weeks considering the distinct skill-sets necessary to each degree scheme in the Department, contextualized within the professional fields that they are tied to. There will be an opportunity to reflect on disciplinary difference, as well as the connecting threads of narrative, language and communication. The title of the module derives from the fact that every subject in the Department requires an engagement with writing on some level, and an understanding of the role that written communication serves.

Secondly, students will develop an understanding of the work they do within the Department, in the context of the wider society. Students will come to understand the opportunities that are available during and after their time at Essex, and begin the life-long process of continuous professional development with a firm grounding in the practical skills and reflective practice involved.

Aims

* To reflect on the function of each of the subjects accommodated by the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies (LiFTS), and examine their relationship to one another

* To isolate, reflect on, and develop the key communication skills held in common by all the subjects in LiFTS

* To have some understanding of the graduate labour market and the opportunities within this market

* To take inspiration from the world of work and consider its relationship to their current study

* To begin to develop the practical skills, including reflection and self-representation, that will give students the best advantage in achieving their goals

This module will be co-taught by staff from all disciplines, and careers advisers from the Employability and Careers Centre. The module will be compulsory for all students, except for mature students for whom this module will be optional.
