Aims and objectives

Japanese Beginners One is part of the Languages for All programme. It aims to provide students with
a. the basic language skills necessary to communicate in Japanese in simple, everyday tasks and situations related to living, studying or working in Japan
b. an introduction to Japanese culture and to living in a Japanese-speaking environment
c. a general introduction to Japanese syllables and some characters
d. the basic structures and language study skills to ensure progression in language proficiency

The main goal of Japanese Beginners One is to help students acquire the basic language skills needed to cope with simple, everyday conversations in Japanese. At the same time, students are encouraged to learn Hiragana syllables to read and write. Students also learn about aspects of life and culture in present-day Japan. Among the skills taught in Japanese Beginners One are the following: exchanging greetings and making small talk, introducing oneself and one's family to other people, use numbers for personal information such as age, telephone number, dates, time, shopping, etc. The course also covers shopping. More specific details are provided in the work programme handed out at the start of each term.
