Module Description

This course is an introduction to the syntax of the English language, looking at the various syntactic structures present in the language. This will include phenomena such as word order, embedded clauses, tense and aspect, question formation, and passives. An emphasis of the course is using syntactic argumentation to propose and defend analyses of syntactic structures.

Aims

To provide an overview to syntactic phenomena and introduce students to engaging with syntactic analysis. There is a further goal of giving students training in writing clear syntactic argumentation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this half module, students should
a) Begin to implement formal tools to aid in understanding syntax.
b) Apply critical thinking to datasets centered around language.
c) Develop writing and argumentation skills.
