This module examines relationships between art, architecture and visual culture, and the spaces, places, and localities from which they emerge. Focusing on post-1945 art, we will consider the ways in which artworks both emerge from and produce their settings. Asking what might be at stake in renouncing the boundary between art and its surroundings, the module will explore how conventional definitions of the artistic medium were expanded in the period. Topics will include: site specificity; installation art; the artist’s studio; land art.
