Module Description

This course investigates the domain of argument structure: an area which looks at the syntactic and semantic properties of the arguments of a predicate. The focus of the course will be on argument realization in English with an emphasis on English argument alternations, though data from other languages may be discussed as relevant

Aims

To provide a basic introduction to grammatical description through the investigation of English word and sentence structure. To begin to develop some analytic skills in Linguistics.


Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this half module, students should
a) Have a broad exposure to issues in research on argument structure and various leading theories approaching these issues
b) Be equipped to approach seminal work in syntax and semantics
c) Understand the empirical nature of argument structure in English and the syntactic and semantic underpinnings of this phenomenon
