This module aims to introduce the basic concepts and skills required in consecutive interpreting to beginners. The basic CI skills include: note-taking/ memory; active listening; quick understanding and processing of the main ideas of the speech; pre-task preparation (i.e. research, background knowledge and terminology-building); the ability to produce accurate and concise interpreting which is grammatically correct, and faithful to the register and appropriate for the style of the speaker; public speaking skills (projection, posture, style, pacing, overcoming nervous habits, withstanding pressure); the ability to provide and receive constructive criticism; the ability to monitor one's own work and identify and learn from mistakes made; adaptability in challenging and changing circumstances; and the ability to work with speakers, colleagues, texts, and AV tools.
In addition, this module is to help beginners of CI become familiarized with and interested in general topics such as trade, politics, economics and current affairs.
