Aims and objectives 

French Beginners Two is part of the Languages for All programme. It aims to provide students with: 

  • The basic language skills necessary to communicate in French in simple, everyday tasks and situations related to living, studying or working in France; 

  • A deeper understanding of the culture and traditions in France and other and Francophone countries; 

  • The basic structures and language study skills to ensure progression in language proficiency. 

The main goal of French Beginners Two is to help students progress on the basic language skills acquired in LX196 or in another beginner's course. The language focuses on simple, everyday conversations in French and the following speaking abilities: 

  • introducing oneself and offering and asking for specific information about age, nationality, family, profession and other personal details; 

  • asking questions and talking about social relationships; 

  • talking about the future and expressing purpose; 

  • describing one’s family, relationships with siblings and explaining family ties; 

  • describing one’s physical appearance, personality and habits;  

  • reminiscing about childhood using the imperfect tense; 

  • using the perfect tense to describe specific, one-time past encounters; 

  • describing your town and a country, its geography and cuisine; 

  • expressing shopping habits, your impressions and feelings; 

  • expressing preferences and talking about the urban phenomenon;  

  • telling a personal anecdote; 

  • making a polite request, expressing a desire and future hope; 

  • making suggestions, giving advice, expressing an obligation; 

  • describing an object, clothes and one’s shopping habits. 

You will also learn about aspects of life and culture in present-day France through Inspire 2 online resources available to students via Parcours Digital and TV5Monde cultural video resources. More specific details are provided in the work programme handed out at the start of each term.
