This module has been designed for 1st year PhD students from a wide range of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary areas but may also be of relevance to 2nd year or even 3rd year students experiencing difficulty with skill areas outlined in the syllabus below. M.Res students and 'New Route' PhD students, including those in their M.Phil year, are also eligible participants.
The main aim is to guide students through the process of developing and refining a research topic. This will involve a consideration of the importance of different types of reading and writing skills and tasks at different stages of PhD research. One important feature of the module is the emphasis on writing not just as an end product of thinking but as a form or process of thinking itself.
