Aims and objectives 

French Beginners One is part of the Languages for All programme. It aims to provide students with: 

  • the basic language skills necessary to communicate in French in simple, everyday tasks and situations related to living, studying or working in France; 

  • an introduction to French culture and to living in a French-speaking country; 

  • the basic structures and language study skills to ensure progression in language proficiency. 

The main goal of French Beginners One is to help students acquire the basic language skills needed to cope with simple, everyday conversations in French and to develop the following speaking abilities: 

  • greetings, asking formal and informal questions; 

  • introducing yourself and giving basic information about yourself and others; 

  • days of the week, months of the year, numbers 0 – 99 and 100 - 1,000,000; 

  • making a hotel booking and telling the date; 

  • presenting and describing your family, understanding information about one’s family;  

  • stating and describing your profession; 

  • describing one’s personality and physical appearance; 

  • saying and asking others about likes and dislikes during free time activities and expressing preferences; 

  • describing a place and saying where you live; 

  • giving and asking for directions in town; 

  • inviting, accepting and refusing an invitation; 

  • telling time and the 24-hour clock; 

  • describing and understanding one’s daily routine and sports. 

You will also learn about aspects of life and culture in present-day France through Inspire 1 online resources available to students via Parcours Digital and TV5Monde cultural video resources. More specific details are provided in the work programme handed out at the start of each term.
