This module studies the work carried out by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the two bodies that make up the Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights. The module covers its legal, judicial and quasi-judicial dimensions as well as the social and political context in which the System operates. The module will analyse the System’s understanding of various rights under the American Convention on Human Rights and other applicable treaties and instruments. In particular it will look at the rights to life, humane treatment, personal liberty, fair trial, judicial guarantees, indigenous rights, violence against women, non-discrimination and equality, socio-economic rights and the right to reparation.
