This module will examine how second language vocabulary can be taught, assessed and researched. It aims to familiarise students with current research in second language vocabulary teaching, testing, and use. The knowledge that will be gained will be useful to students who wish to work as language teachers and/or conduct second language vocabulary research.

It will initially introduce students to basic concepts (e.g. 'lexical item', 'vocabulary knowledge') and it will familiarise them with psychological research on the learning and processing of second language vocabulary. This theoretical knowledge will form the basis for the more applied classes that will follow. Most classes will examine methods of second language vocabulary teaching and practice, including how teachers can test their students' vocabulary knowledge.
