This module commences with generalist concepts of public international law, including the nature of international law, sources, treaties, subjects, responsibility of States for internationally wrongful conduct, and international institutional law. It then continues to study in considerable depth selected specialist areas of public international law including the laws on the use of force, and the international law of the sea.
A generalist public international law foundation is essential for more specialized study in international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and for practice at the United Nations, its specialized agencies and other international organizations, international courts and tribunals, Ministries and NGOs.
Aims
The present module endeavors to provide students with necessary understanding of public international law as a necessary basis for further study and careers within this field. It is expected that upon successful completion of the course, students will have a thorough knowledge and insight of the international legal framework and the ability to apply the principles of public international law to more specialist areas of study and research.
