Module Description

This module provides practical experience of project work within a workplace environment for study abroad students coming to the University of Essex. The workplace may be a company or a research group within a university, including the University of Essex. The module will be assessed by portfolio which includes evidence of the work achieved. The portfolio will be documented through a report. The portfolio will be assessed by two members of staff at the University of Essex.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Carry out a body of work in a workplace environment
2. Demonstrate an experience-based understanding of work roles within a computer science or electronic engineering based industry.
3. Demonstrate a capacity to connect subject specific theory to practice in a work environment within a computer science or electronic engineering based industry.
4. Improve personal professional practice through a reflective approach within a work environment
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the needs of a business and how it relates to the work carried out in the placement.
6. Show knowledge of business practices within one particular business sector of a computer science or electronic engineering based industry.


Module Information

This module is only available as part of a full-year (120 credit) study abroad year for incoming students.
Availability of this module is subject to suitable projects being available from an Industrial partner. Students on a Tier-4 visa can take this module, but it is essential that they keep in contact with the Placements Team within the Employability and Careers Centre to register their attendance and check that the work complies with their visa. Additionally, study abroad students wishing to take this module must liase with Essex Abroad to check that taking this module complies with the policies of their home University.
