The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the nature and causes of emotional and relational difficulties and an overall understanding of the helping relationship. It will provide the foundations for further study in counselling, enabling students to be more effective in their interpersonal functioning and to offer a more mature, empathic and sensitive presence to employers and future clients in any future field or profession.

Aims

This module aims to lay the foundations for an understanding of emotional distress and of the helping relationship. It aims to help students appreciate the complexity of human experience and the rewards and challenges of providing emotional support. It aims to provide those studying a related academic subject with understanding which will usefully complement their core subject knowledge with familiarity with counselling ideas. For those who wish to include counselling or therapy in their future career development it will provide a useful foundation from which to proceed.
