This module explores the rich and dynamic relationship between art and place, tracing connections from the Medieval era right up to the 21st century. Together we’ll look at how visual art, architecture, and the applied arts both shape — and are shaped by — the spaces, politics, and societies in which they exist.
Bridging past and present, the course ranges from sacred landscapes and urban planning to revolutionary movements, public and street art, and the contested politics of space. Along the way, we’ll draw on perspectives from philosophy, art history, political science, and social studies to ask how art engages with heritage, protest, power, and everyday environments.
The emphasis throughout is on independent research, visual analysis, and critical thinking. By the end of the module, you’ll be encouraged to see not only artworks but also your own surroundings as active sites of meaning, debate, and inquiry.
